HOME COOKING

The Dinner Party is Back:
Whether it's improving their baking, taking on canning and fermentation projects, or learning how to spatchcock and roast a whole chicken, home cooks are ready to host.
Convenience is King:
Folks will be looking for ways to save time and money, such as freezing for ready-to-eat meals, increased bulk buying, and utilizing grocery delivery and meal kits.
Zero Waste:
More home cooks will be implementing zero-waste recipes to build more sustainable lifestyles and combat food waste. Get ready for more “nose to tail” or “root to tip” style of eating like saving trimmings and vegetable peels to make broth and using green carrot tops to make a pesto.
Home-Grown Health:
Plant parenthood became a prime pandemic hobby, expanding beyond houseplants to herbs and vegetables. So we think more home cooks will be spotlighting home-grown ingredients in their meals.
Not Just Meat N’ Potatoes:
Social media’s exposure to cultural cuisines, combined with increased confidence in the kitchen will allow us to expand our palates and culinary skills with international recipes. So get ready to experience more South American flavors in 2022—think spicy peppers like Aji Amarillo and conveniently tasty handheld foods like empanadas and tacos.
Holistic Approach in the Kitchen:
We think there will be a continued emphasis on what we should eat more of, rather than what to cut out or eliminate. So look to embrace the mentality that all foods have a place in someone’s diet.

INNOVATIVE INGREDIENTS

Boats of Oats:
They’re cheap, versatile, and nutrient-dense. We’ve seen a surge of oat-based products like milks and yogurts so get ready to see baked oats take the world by storm.
Grain-Based Milks:
Soy and nut milks have become hugely popular, but prepare to see more grain-based milk alternatives, such as barley and buckwheat milks.
Algae-Based Oils:
These oils have a great nutrition profile with higher levels of monounsaturated fat (the “good” fat) and lower levels of saturated fat compared to traditional cooking oils—plus, they’re more sustainable!

SNACKS & STAPLES

Spicy Food:
People are going to want to heat things up a little with spicy foods like hot sauces, hot honeys, and chili crisps, seasonings like Tajin or gochujang, flaming hot snacks, and more.
Double-Duty Snacks:
Drinks and snacks infused with CBD, probiotics, vitamins, minerals, and electrolytes have been exploding and that’s not going to stop anytime soon—think CBD-infused peanut butter, adaptogenic broth bases, and more.
Low-to-No ABV Beverages:
Folks will still want to enjoy their favorite foods and drinks, with just a little less guilt. Low-to-no alcoholic beverages help to enjoy the complexities and flavors without the hangover.
Plant-Based Jerky:
Move over fruit and veggie chips because plant-based jerky is about to take over your pantries. Healthy, versatile, and DIY-able, you can make jerky out of your favorite fruits or veggies, like coconuts, bananas, mushrooms, carrots, and more.
Superior Staples:
Your everyday pantry staples and go-to foods, but elevated with functional additions. Think protein-packed snacks, superfood baked goods, premium oils in pre-jarred salad dressings and condiments.
Probiotics:
Get ready for a better gut in 2022 thanks to the rise in probiotics. Fridges will be stocked with probiotic-packed snacks like kimchi, kefir, yogurt, and pickles.
Powerful Proteins:
High-protein snacks help you feel full and satisfied, while providing long-lasting energy. We predict an uptick in protein-packed snack foods such as nut and seed butters, cheeses like ricotta and mozzarella, and chickpea-based snacks.
