This super-simple weeknight dinner idea is about to turn your world upside-down—literally! It’s crust-on-top pizza! Here’s how you make it: sauté hearty, savory chicken sausage and bell peppers, stir in marinara sauce, add mozzarella and Parmesan, then top with premade crescent roll dough (mmm…flaky goodness!). Bake it all to bubbly, golden perfection, then brush with savory garlic butter, and in just 25 minutes, you’ll be serving it up like a kitchen hero!
4 ounce
Crescent Rolls
(Contains: Wheat)
9 ounce
Italian Chicken Sausage Mix
½ cup
Mozzarella Cheese
(Contains: Milk)
1 unit
Bell Pepper
1 teaspoon
Garlic Powder
5 ounce
Marinara Sauce
1 teaspoon (tsp)
Cooking Oil
1 tablespoon (tbsp)
Butter
(Contains: Milk)
teaspoon (tsp)
Salt
teaspoon (tsp)
Black Pepper

• Adjust rack to middle position and preheat oven to 425 degrees. Wash and dry produce. • Halve, core, and dice bell pepper into ½-inch pieces.

• Heat a drizzle of oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add sausage* and bell pepper; cook, breaking up meat into pieces, until browned and cooked through, 4-6 minutes. • Remove pan from heat; stir in marinara and mozzarella until well combined. • Transfer sausage mixture to an 8-by-8-inch baking dish (9-by-13-inch baking dish for 4 servings).

• While sausage mixture cooks, place 1 TBSP butter (2 TBSP for 4 servings) in a small microwave-safe bowl. Microwave until softened, 30-40 seconds. • Stir in garlic powder until well combined.

• Unroll Pillsbury™️ Original Crescent Rolls on a clean work surface. • Pinch seams together and gently stretch dough to the size of baking dish (for 4 servings, stretch each dough sheet to half the size of baking dish). TIP: Don’t worry if it doesn’t look perfect! The dough will expand while baking.

• Top sausage mixture with dough (for 4 servings, arrange both squares of dough side by side to cover sausage mixture). • Bake on middle rack until crust is golden brown, 10-12 minutes. • Remove from oven and brush crust with garlic butter. Let cool for at least 5 minutes.

• Slice upside down pizza into four pieces (eight pieces for 4 servings). Divide between plates and serve.
Chicken is fully cooked when internal temperature reaches 165°.
Awesome! Super delicious! Modified a lot.. cooked the sausage and peppers and then added in the sauce for about 10 mins to cook into the meat/veggie! And added onion too! We also added in a bit of extra 6 blend Italian cheese and instead of the sauce provided-I used a basil marinara I had! And then added fresh garlic and Italian seasonings with the butter to baste it!
Elevate this to the next level by adding things you love. I added mushrooms, onions, and jalapenos. I also added red pepper flakes and about 1/4 cup of Romano Cheese. Also added a pinch of basil leaves to the butter/garlic powder mixture. Don't be afraid to step it up.
VERY tasty! Fun to put together. Do mine in cast iron pan, then bake it in same. Saves on time and dishes. Looks great on the table too.
The chicken sausage is excellent and I love cooking with crescent dough. Something to brighten up the flavor would be good, but that's probably just me (I find anything tomato-sauce-based to be a little heavy). It's probably more appealing to young kids as-is. Maybe you could also offer a florentine version? The chicken sausage would be an exciting twist on that. I threw some pesto into the sauce and that helped.
This was super delicious, and almost entirely identical to the other meal with the crescent roll dough on top, so very easy to put together. But there was almost nothing to it. Maybe adding potatoes something to bulk it out, or a salad on the side. I dunno, I appreciate it only being 700 calories, but there wasn't much of it.
This tasted better than I expected with it having a whole sweet pepper. I added some Italian seasoning and cheddar cheese. The chicken sausage was well seasoned.
In general this was a fun concept for a casserole. However, adding the garlic butter to crescent roll dough (which already has a high level of butter) just made it soggy again. I'd suggest brushing the butter on at the beginning or at least part-way through so the crust retains its texture.
This meal was a BIG hit. I loved it didn't take much to prepare but had lots of flavor.
Everyone loved this! The kids barely noticed the red peppers. I would have liked more veggies to make this a full meal, such as onions and mushrooms.
