Sloppy joes are the ultimate throwback. The name alone transports us back to the cafeteria line, that tangy smell of ketchup-spiked tomato sauce lingering, the giddy anticipation of sitting down to eat. We’ve grown up since then, however, and in turn, so have our sloppy joes. (In ingredients and flavor, not in spirit of course—we wouldn’t want them to!) This version is worlds tastier than the ones the lunch lady slung. Think: sliced pickles, a smoky BBQ sauce, and a side of hearty potato wedges. (We’d definitely still recommend keeping a few napkins nearby, though.)

Produced in a facility that processes eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat.

Cooking Steps

Roast Potatoes
1

• Adjust rack to top position and preheat oven to 450 degrees. Wash and dry produce. • Slice potatoes into ¼-inch-thick rounds. Toss on a baking sheet with a large drizzle of oil, Fry Seasoning, salt, and pepper. • Roast on top rack until lightly browned and tender, 18-20 minutes.

Prep & Make Sauce
2

• While potatoes roast, halve, peel, and dice onion. Halve buns. • In a small bowl, combine BBQ sauce, ketchup, chili powder, stock concentrate, half the cornstarch, and 1 TBSP water. (For 4 servings, use all the cornstarch and 2 TBSP water.) Set aside.

Start Filling
3

• Heat a drizzle of oil in a large pan over medium-high heat. Add onion; cook, stirring, until softened, 4-5 minutes. • Add beef*; season with salt and pepper. Cook, breaking up meat into pieces, until browned, 3-5 minutes (it’ll finish cooking in the next step).

Finish Filling
4

• Add BBQ sauce mixture to pan with beef. Cook, stirring, until sauce has thickened and beef is cooked through, 2-3 minutes. Taste and season with salt and pepper. Turn off heat.

Toast Buns
5

• While filling cooks, toast buns until golden brown.

Serve
6

• Fill buns with as much beef filling and sliced pickle as you like. Divide sloppy joes between plates. Serve with potatoes and any remaining pickle on the side.

Loved this twist on a sloppy joe! The ancho bbq sauce was delicious and the potatoes sliced and oven roasted this way were perfect. Yum!

The Fry seasoning for the potatoes was sweet, tangy and well seasoned which raised the level of the potato chips to a new level! The seasoning on the sloppy joe meat was also a surprise - I thought it would be spicy but rather, it turned out very flavorful and rich. The pickle was also just the right amount of sour - I was able to slice the pickle to my liking without getting that "artisan" look that many whole pickles have - great combo!

Very delicious I loved the addition of the ancho chili powder. It adds a spicy, smoky flavor to the sloppy joe filling. It was great an easy, quick, and delicious meal.

We enjoyed the tasty sloppy joes! Another variation from the "norm" in spices. We liked these sandwiches! The potatoes turned out great, and I even surprised myself eating the pickles on the sandwich! Yum! BTW the meat recipe made 4 hearty sandwiches, not just 2!

Best dill pickle ever! I usually can't finish a spear and I ate the whole dill pickle in two days. The ancho bbq sloppy joe was really really good also. My only comment is about the picture. The potatoes look seasoned with something other than salt and pepper yet in the recipe they are not.

Easy. The sloppy joe sauce had a nice smokiness from the ancho chili powder and I really liked it served on potato buns.

It didn't have as much flavor as I would have liked with the name ancho bbq sloppy joes. Has great potential though-easy to make and yummy potato buns but a little more flavor and a bit of spice would have been perfect!

I really liked the sloppy joe recipe. I was telling someone that it was an upgrade to Manwich. My husband said, "there is nothing wrong with Manwich." But, I liked this recipe better. I didn't think the pickle added anything special as slices--too tough. When I make this again, I'll chop the pickle to make it easier to eat.

Good recipe, simple enough, flavorful, but still feels like Sloppy Joes without churching it up -too- much. I would note that the recipe makes substantially more sloppy joe filling than will fit on 2x buns. It tasted good enough that I just spooned up the extra, but it genuinely wouldn't come close to fitting on just 2 of the provided rolls no matter how you piled it on.

The pickle was superb-it never got near a Sloppy Joe! I love dill pickles. I was afraid the BBQ would be too spicy, but it was just right. Granted, the pickle would have really brought out the full flavor, but I really enjoyed it nonetheless. Loved the potatoes! Quick, easy, and just the right amount. Very very pleased so far, and I don't expect that to change.
