“Tender” takes on a whole new meaning in this earthy, Latin American–inspired meal. Packed with shredded beef, tomato, peppers, onion, and garlic, this hearty mixture is cooked until it’s melt-in-your-mouth delicious. It’s served over rice and black beans, perfect for soaking up every last drop. Sweet plantains balance out the savory spices, adding a tasty topping to each serving.

Review summary

Updated on Sep 2026
  • Flavor: The sauce was well-received by some, but many found the beef bland and lacking the depth of authentic Latin flavors 🍲.
  • Ease of prep: Simple to heat in the oven, though some noted it took longer than directed — one reviewer needed to increase the temperature to 415°F and add 15 extra minutes.
  • Suggestions: Fry the plantains separately for better caramelization and texture; some also added roasted carrots or extra vegetables to boost the meal.
  • Portions: Several reviewers felt the dish was more like one generous serving than two; pairing with extra rice or beans helps stretch it.
  • Plantains: Plantains were a highlight for many, but some found them mushy or dry — cooking them separately is the best way to get the right texture 🎉.

This dish actually was a surprise like. When I first took it out of the box, I wasn't so sure. My biggest disappointment was the 3 very small pieces of plantains. Come on, the dish is supposed to serve 2, so why not at least give us 4? The plantains, IMO, is what really brings this dish together. You get the perfect bite with the shredded beef, rice and beans and then a piece of the plantain. That little pop of sweetness made each bite sing. Once the dish was plated, it looked so much better than what you were seeing in the container. I plated each item separately. The cost of the dish was a bit steep too. Honestly, this entire dish should be under [MASKED] not per person. Would I buy it again? Only if the price is reduced.

Flavors were great, but that wasn't enough overall for two portions. More rice, black beans, and plaintains would really have been nice to make a full meal while keeping to a reasonable and healthy amount of beef.

Tasted very good for being a pre-made meal. It heated well. The sweetness from the plantains balanced from the tomato forward beef. Only thing is I wished there was more beef it just kind of seemed like mush.

Loved this and were delighted by the completeness of this meal!! We used to live in a part of FL where we could get this "ropa vieja" (I probably butchered that spelling!) We are not Spanish but got used to great Cuban food living in Tampa. We definitely miss it!! This was a very good substitute.

Love this beef, tastes like barbacoa beef. Not a fan of the plantains though.

Very convenient! The plantains were delicious. The meal was really good. I found the meat more tart than spicy.

Wow! So good! I am impressed!! Loved the flavors. My only concern was my plastic container melted a lot using the oven directions. A metal pan would have been better.
