When it comes to fall meals, we pretty much always want to be digging our spoon into a warm bowl of soup or biting into a melty grilled cheese. Well, no need to choose between the two! This grilled cheese has all the flavor of French onion soup packed between two slices of sourdough. *Nutrition values are representative of a 1/4 bundle serving.*
8 slice
Gouda Cheese
(Contains: Milk)
2 unit
Yellow Onion
24 g
Beef Stock Concentrate
8 piece
Sourdough Bread
(Contains: Soy, Wheat)
2 ounce
Garlic Herb Butter
(Contains: Milk)
Salt
Pepper
2 tablespoon
Cooking Oil
2 teaspoon
Sugar
1 tablespoon
Butter
(Contains: Milk)
Halve, peel, and thinly slice onions.
Heat a large drizzle of oil in a large, preferably nonstick, pan over medium-high heat. Add onions; cook, stirring occasionally, until browned and softened, 8-10 minutes. Stir in 2 tsp sugar, stock concentrates, and ¼ cup water. Cook, stirring, until onions are jammy and water is absorbed, 2-3 minutes more. Remove pan from heat and stir in half the garlic herb butter until melted; season with salt and pepper. Transfer onions to a small bowl. Wipe out pan.
Spread half the sourdough slices with remaining garlic herb butter. Evenly top buttered slices with gouda and onions, then top with remaining slices to make sandwiches.
Heat 1 TBSP butter in a large pan over medium heat. Add sandwiches; cook until bread is golden and cheese melts, 4-6 minutes per side. (Work in batches if necessary).
Cut in half on a diagonal and serve.
This elevated grilled cheese was terrific! The sweet and savory flavors of the onions complimented the richness of the Gouda cheese and garlic herb butter-wow! We paired this with a creamy tomato soup for a warm and comforting weeknight dinner.
Wow! Hands-down, the most gourmet grilled cheese I've ever had! The flavors were a symphony of delicious flavors on my tongue. The Sourdough bread was generously portioned and two pieces of Gouda per sandwich made it perfect. Wouldn't change a thing!
Easy to make & the caramelized onions with Gouda combination was phenomenal!
Flavors are great! One of my onions was a bit small so I think it did not make enough onion jam for 4 sandwiches. The sandwich tasted more like a gouda grilled cheese with an onion condiment. I'll try it again though and have another onion on the side, just in case.
This was incredible! It was fairly easy to prepare and cooked up quickly. It really tasted like French Onion Soup, and the jammy onions really helped to soften up the break to make it a great sandwich. Honestly the best grilled cheese I've had in my life, and I'm so excited there are 4 servings so I will be able to get another meal out of what you sent!
I enjoyed this meal, except that there wasn't enough of the onion mixture for the sandwiches. The bread is large, so the sandwiches are large too. But the onion layer on the sandwiches was skimpy and didn't impart enough of the French onion flavor to the sandwiches.
Omggg amazing! I thought the Gouda and onion might be too much together but they complemented each other perfectly!
I don't even like French onion. But this was very simple and delicious. Saving the recipe for the future. I'll be making it again!
What's not to love? Grilled Cheese Sandwich and French Onion Soup in each delicious bite. A Family Fave.
Easy to make, it was good but could use a little more something for the actual French onion part. But otherwise it was tasty!
