Bowls are way past “having a moment.” They’ve become a pillar of our lunches and dinners. Why? It’s simple: Everything’s better in a bowl! (Nice knowing you, plates.) But seriously, the customizable combo of carbs, protein, veggies, and a drizzle of delicious sauce cannot be beat. True to form, this Tex-Mex rendition is fully loaded. Steamy cilantro-lime rice is topped with saucy spiced ground pork, charred poblano and onion, salsa fresca, and smoky red pepper crema. Who needs a tortilla when you’ve got #bowlgoals!

Produced in a facility that processes eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat.

Cooking Steps

Cook Rice
1

• In a small pot, combine rice, ¾ cup water (1½ cups for 4 servings), and a pinch of salt. Bring to a boil, then cover and reduce to a low simmer. Cook until rice is tender, 15-18 minutes. • Keep covered off heat until ready to serve.

Prep
2

• While rice cooks, wash and dry all produce. • Finely dice tomato. Halve, peel, and cut half the onion (whole onion for 4 servings) into ½-inch-thick wedges. Mince one wedge until you have 1 TBSP (2 TBSP for 4). Zest and quarter lime. Core, deseed, and dice poblano into ½-inch pieces. Mince cilantro.

Make Salsa & Crema
3

• In a small bowl, combine tomato, minced onion, and a big squeeze of lime juice; season with salt. • Add smoky red pepper crema to a separate small bowl. Stir in water 1 tsp at a time until mixture reaches a drizzling consistency.

Cook Veggies
4

• Heat a drizzle of oil in a medium pan (use a large pan for 4 servings) over medium-high heat. Add poblano and onion wedges. Season with salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until softened and lightly charred, 7-9 minutes. • Transfer to a plate.

Cook Pork
5

• Heat a drizzle of oil in same pan over medium-high heat. Add pork* and a big pinch of salt. Cook, breaking up meat into pieces, until browned, 4-6 minutes. • Stir in Tex-Mex paste and ¼ cup water (1⁄3 cup for 4 servings) until combined. Bring to a simmer and cook until mixture is saucy and pork is cooked through, 1-2 minutes more. • Turn off heat.

Finish & Serve
6

• Fluff rice with a fork; stir in lime zest and half the cilantro. Season with salt and pepper. TIP: Stir in 1 TBSP butter (2 TBSP for 4 servings) for extra richness. • Divide rice between bowls and top with veggies, saucy pork, any remaining sauce from pan, salsa, crema, and remaining cilantro. Serve with remaining lime wedges on the side.

Review summary

Updated on Apr 2026
  • Flavor: Many love the bold, authentic Tex-Mex flavors and spice level; some find it bland and suggest adding extra seasoning or hot sauce.
  • Ease of prep: Quick and simple to make with straightforward steps, though some note it takes longer than the estimated time.
  • Suggestions: Add more water when cooking rice to prevent burning; drain pork grease for less oily results.
  • Portions: Generous meat portions but rice quantity feels light for some; many enjoy substantial leftovers.
  • Sauce: Not saucy enough for most — double the smoky crema and add extra Tex-Mex paste for better flavor coating.

The saucy pork burrito bowl is a delicious explosion of flavor! Better than any burrito bowl I've had at popular restaurants, and now I can make them at home!

Takeout burrito bowls have become a favorite of mine in the last year. These burrito bowls were delicious, combining cilantro-lime flavored rice with a saucy ground pork mixture. They did not disappoint!

These bowls were great! Spicy, savory, smoky, sweet flavor that paired well with the jasmine rice! I only wish there were just a little more of the rice to go around for the burrito filling.

There's nothing about this meal to "like the least". This is one of our favorites. The meal portions with HelloFresh are just right. Never feel like we're going hungry after one of these dinners. This "Saucy Pork Burrito Bowl" we really liked.

Loved the flavor of the rice with the lime zest and the cilantro! Chef's kiss! I am not typically a lover of pork, but I really enjoyed this. The salsa on the pork and the crema made it delightful.

We're suckers for quick bowl dishes and this one didn't disappoint! Great flavors and the rice was the thing that took the longest. We cheat and add the rice to the saucy pork and just mix it all together! It may not look like the pictures but it's great!!

I switched this recipe up a little and discarded the vinegar and used lime instead. I also dice some of the green pepper and add it to the tomato/onion mix for more flavors. Turned out good!! I like when the lime and Cilantro is included with the rice bowl meals. But I made do with what I had on hand. I also wish they included 2 if the smoky crema sauces. One is never enough for us

Taste is good but needs more saucy, considering it's called "saucy" burrito bowls.

The spicy burrito bowl was very good. The salsa was ok but was missing cilantro and jalapeno. Rather than using the bland salsa, I made a mango salsa from scratch- I think a fruited salsa would have added a nice sweet balance to the heat/spice of the recipe.

Flavorful with a little ooo-la-la spice. Loved the medley of Cilantro Lemon Jasmine Rice, ground pork, sautéed and chard peppers & onions, topped with tomatoes salsa and smoky creama. I added sliced avocado and ate with warmed tortillas.
