If you think a fried chicken sandwich can only be procured at your local fast food joint, think again! We’re bringing this classic American sando right to your kitchen, and we’re confident ours is about a jillion times better (particularly if you’re a mustard fan!). You’ll pound chicken cutlets, coat them in our smoky mustard, then coat with breadcrumbs. After shallow-frying to crisp, juicy perfection, you’ll tuck the chicken into pillowy potato buns with a heap of creamy slaw for fresh, crunchy contrast. Serve sweet roasted carrots on the side for a wholesome meal upgrade—no drive-thru necessary!

Produced in a facility that processes eggs, milk, fish, peanuts, sesame, shellfish, soy, tree nuts, and wheat.

Cooking Steps

Prep
1

• Adjust rack to top position and preheat oven to 425 degrees. Wash and dry produce. • Trim, peel, and cut carrots on a diagonal into 1⁄2-inch-thick pieces. Quarter lemon. • In a shallow dish, combine panko with a pinch of salt and pepper.

Roast Carrots
2

• Toss carrots on a baking sheet with a large drizzle of oil, salt, and pepper. Roast on top rack until browned and tender, 25-30 minutes.

Prep Chicken
3

• Pat chicken* dry with paper towels. Place between two large pieces of plastic wrap; pound with a mallet or rolling pin until about 1⁄2 inch thick. Season all over with Fry Seasoning, salt, and pepper. • Brush chicken all over with mustard. Working one piece at a time, press chicken into seasoned panko until fully coated on both sides.

Cook Chicken
4

• Heat a 1⁄4-inch layer of oil in a large,

heavy-bottomed pan over medium- high heat.

• Once oil is hot enough that a pinch of panko sizzles when added to the pan, add coated chicken in a single layer. Cook until panko is golden and chicken is cooked through, 3-5 minutes per side (you may need to work in batches for 4 servings). TIP: Reduce heat if chicken begins to brown too quickly. • Transfer to a paper-towel-lined plate.

Make Slaw
5

• In a large bowl, combine coleslaw mix, mayonnaise, 1⁄4 tsp sugar (1⁄2 tsp for 4 servings), juice from half the lemon, salt, and pepper.

Finish & Serve
6

• Halve and toast buns. • Fill buns with chicken and slaw. • Divide sandos between plates. Serve with roasted carrots and remaining lemon wedges on the side.

Chicken is fully cooked when internal temperature reaches 165°.

Review summary

Updated on Dec 2025
  • Flavor: Many loved the smoky mustard flavor, though some found it mild; consider adding extra mustard as a condiment 🍲.
  • Ease of prep: Breading the chicken was tricky for some; try adding flour before coating to help panko stick better.
  • Suggestions: Add pickles or onions to boost flavor; consider including a sauce like garlic aioli for extra moisture.
  • Leftovers: Chicken reheats well; some found it tasty even when eaten cold the next day.
  • Sides: Several wished for a different side; roasted carrots were divisive, with some loving them and others preferring fries.

I did the carrots and the chicken in the airfryer and this recipe was very easy to follow. The packet of panko was more than enough to use in relation to the size of the cutlets I used. The chicken came out delicious, loved the smoked mustard vs. sour cream or honey mustard we see in other HF recipes. I would maybe make carrot spears instead of coins as a side for this meal (we had this for a lunch) or maybe make a different side altogether like a salad or chips.

The smoky mustard was completely lost and you couldn't tell it was in this dish at all. It tasted just like any other regular HelloFresh chicken sandwich. It would have been better if more of the smoky mustard was provided so it could have been used as a sauce for the sandwich.

Very good! I didn't fully follow the recipe. I really like that smoky mustard sauce, so I didn't use it to coat the chicken and instead saved it to put on top of my completed sandwich! Not sure if i would get this recipe again (just not fun enough of a recipe/not unique enough), but definitely liked it!

Let me say this was so good but I get 4 person meals and the amount of the carrots are not enough for 3 people never mind 4 I had to add more carrots also the mustard sauce you need to put on the chicken is not enough for both sides I had to add mayo to the back side. Otherwise this meal is very good! Please take note to these suggestions thank you

It was just okay for me. I thought with "Smoky Mustard" being in the name that the taste of it would be much more prominent, but it wasn't. Crunch of the panko and cole slaw was really good. Was just looking for much more flavor.

The lemony slaw was a perfect complement to the smoky mustard. Great for a quick weeknight meal!

This could've been so delicious and I was looking so forward to eating this but the amount of mustard they provide was NOT enough to make this sandwich appropriately. The amount of mustard provided was barely enough for 1 piece of chicken so I found the sandwich to be a little dry and bland but if Hello Fresh provided more mustard for the recipe then the chicken would've been so juicy and flavorful

The lemon is the killer ingredient. Wow. The slaw is perfect for the spice on the chicken. I reduced the oil and fried more like a hot skillet with drizzles. Worked perfectly and cut the amount of oily waste. I also am continuing to cook my oven ingredients in the air fryer. My husband loved the tastes

Oh my goodness! I did not expect the deliciousness that was this meal. The slaw topping was so refreshing and yummy. The roasted carrots were a nice change from potato wedges. Very, very good!!

Easy to cook and learned how to make crispy chicken. I also love the roasted carrots instead of potatoes
